Recorder Homework
4th Graders--See the two pictures below in order to practice your recorder pieces for the concert. When practicing work on the fingering, and playing the correct note values as well. Good luck!
First "Fab 5" of the Year
Mrs. Straub's 1st grade class was the 1st class to receive a "perfect 5" in music class! Way to go Mrs. Straub. Each class gets a score every time that they come to music based on how they follow the rules of the music room. The goal is to get a "perfect 5" and then they earn a star on my Fab Five Wall of Fame. If the students earn 5 "perfect 5's", they earn a free day where they get to choose what we do in the music room. Way to go Mrs. Straub's class! :)
3rd Grade Composers/Arrangers
3rd Graders did some composing/arranging in music class last week. Today we recorded ourselves singing and performing our newly written songs. These songs are based on a song called "Alligator Pie" from our book series. We re-wrote the words and then as a whole group figured out the rhythm patterns of the song before practicing for a performance! They had so much fun and worked so hard for me! Way to go 3rd Grade Wildcats! Click on the links below to see the youtube videos!

Kindergarten Writing Songs
Kindergarteners at WDA decided to re-write a song that they were learning called, "My Head and My Shoulders", which labeled different body parts. Students came up with which boy parts to choose and then had to practice singing their version with their own movements. They worked hard, and had a lot of fun too, becoming composers! So cute! Click on the links below to see our WDA Kinders enjoying their new song!

Kindergarten Rockin' the Drums!
Take a look at some of our Kindergarten friends having a blast learning to play the drums on the beat! It takes a lot of self-control to have a drum in your grasp and stay consistently on the beat as a Kindergartener! I was impressed at their efforts and know they will get better and better!
Welcome Back Wildcats!
Welcome back to another school year! I'm so excited to work with your kiddos again and explore the world of music with them! I believe in a very active and hands-on approach to music class, so ask your student what they are doing in music. Oh...and you may hear them call me "The Crazy Lady"...that's okay with me...I love to have fun and be a little crazy to facilitate their learning! :)
2nd & 3rd Grade Christmas Program
Monday, December 8, 2014 at WDA's gymnasium! Concert starts at 6:00 PM. Students will need to arrive at 5:40 to meet as a group and get set to get on the stage. We are doing a musical called, "Humbug!". It promises to be a very entertaining show.
Ask your kids about it! :)

Basketball Voices??
2nd & 3rd Graders are working on their Christmas program music already. This week we learned an unusual way of helping our voices sing. We call it our "basketball voices". What???? You read that right. Ask your student what a basketball voice is and see if they can explain it! Below are the 2nd graders practicing using their basketball voices.
RECORDERS!!!!!
1st Graders Learn High and Low
1st Graders have been working hard at distinguishing between higher sounds and lower sounds. For many of us adults, that is a simple thing. But, for their little ears, it is a big challenge to hear unless it is very high and very low being compared! They are doing great and making great strides! We took what we were learning and applied it to instrument sounds. Ask them which instrument was high and which was low from the pictures below! Hopefully they can tell you right away!
Kindergarten Drummers
Kindergarten students are working hard at learning to stay on the beat. We have done all kinds of movement to the beat (marching, stepping, clapping, patting, swaying, etc). This week we are moving to the next step, playing the drums to the beat! The kids were over-the-moon excited about this! They did a great job of listening and staying on the beat. We discovered it is harder to stay on the beat with instruments because we want to play as much as we can, as fast as we can! :)
3rd Graders Rock!!!
Here are the links to each group's song/video! Enjoy! Reminder that this was all written and achieved in about 20 minutes!!!!

We are having fun learning about the beat vs the rhythm at Washington! Here are some pictures I captured of the classes playing some instruments to the rhythm of the songs! Oh, by the way, ask them what the beat is...I'm hoping they can tell you, show you and do a silly rhyme that I taught them to remember it by. We have learned that the rhythm matches the syllables of the words we are singing.
Washington Singers Information 2013-2014
Choir Information has gone home with 4th grade students! Ask your son/daughter if they picked up a packet of information and encourage them to be a part of the Washington Singers. Don't hesitate to contact me with questions. Washington Singers will meet on Wednesday mornings from 7:30-8:00 AM in the music room. Below is the cover letter that went home with students. If they didn't get a packet and want one, just let me know and I will send one home! Thanks!
Dear Washington Discover Academy 4th Grade Parents,
My name is Tricia Witmer, and I am the music teacher at Washington Discovery Academy! This year I am excited to be continuing the tradition of the Washington Singers choir, which will be starting very soon. The choir is open to all 4th grade students who want to sing and have fun together.
The choir will rehearse BEFORE school on Wednesday mornings from 7:30-8:00 AM. Our first rehearsal will be Wednesday, October 2, 2013. Any time there is a school delay or cancellation, rehearsal will be cancelled.
We have a variety of performances that we will do this year. Of course the choirs will perform at each grade level’s concert during the year and some additional performances are possible as well (Christmas caroling, Veteran’s Day program, Farmer’s Market, etc) and I will let you know of these as soon as I know of them.
Singing in the choir is a commitment of time and effort on the student and parent’s part. I am looking for students willing to give their personal best and stick with choir for the entire year, committing to attend each week’s rehearsal. It is crucial for students to be present at all rehearsals. Only excused absences (illness, death in family, pre-arranged absence) will be allowed. Students with more than two unexcused absences may be asked to leave the choir. The only cost to the student is $3.00 for their choir t-shirt (actual cost is $6 but PTO pays a portion of it). Please return the attached paper no later than the first rehearsal (October 2) but anytime before then is fine too. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you for your support and cooperation!
Sincerely,
Tricia M. Witmer

4th Grade Recorders
Recorders have been ordered and should be in soon! I'm sure you will hear as soon as your son/daughter receives them, as they are VERY excited to get them. Students will be asked to take them home and practice them after we get going with them a bit. I am looking forward to hearing/seeing them learn and grow to play their first instrument.
